FORTIMEDIA

The Fortimedia project is funded under the E-Content European Programme, which aims at promoting the use of the internet.

The Fortimedia Project support the development of European historic culture and tourism by setting up and on line a military heritage site.Fortimedia will propose to the public a content of high added value on military heritage and an exclusive gathering og geographical, historic, educational and tourist information.

The platform will be composed on:

An encyclopedia ( with 3D reconstitutions and animation of monuments on line)
An atlas
One historic page
One tourist information page by member cities that vill participate at the project.
Additionally the project will be on line in several languages sush as Dutch,English,French,German,Italien,Portugese and Spanish. It vill also serve as an information platform for specialists on the conservation of monuments which will encourage

The programme includes 15 cities from the European Union. The cities that are participating in this project will have free access to the website and will be able to update the events that are taking place in the city.

In December 2005, Fortemedia will start being marketed.New fortified sities will be allowed to become members of the platform of Fortemedia. The new members will need to pay an amount of money in order to participate whereas pilot sites will have free access.

There are no financial implications for the cities participating in this project.

Interreg IIIC-

InterMETREX

METREX is the network of European Metropolitan Regions and Areas. It is a network of politicians,officials and their advisers, concerned with the European Spatial planing and Development (ESPD) at the metropolitan level. It is a network through which key European strategic decision makers can share their knowledge, experience and expertise.

The InterMETREX will offer practical benefits to existing metropolitan authorities and to those that are being set up. The partnership reflects this range of interests. This project directly assists the objective of Interreg IIIC to improve the effectiveness of policies and instruments for regional development and cohesion. Many partners are recognizing the need for effective metropolitan governance and other partners are interested in setting up of this metropolitan governance. The InterMETRIX project its led by Glasgow, it involves 41 partners and runs from 2003-2006 with a budget of EUR 1.16m.

URBACT Initiative:

June 2003-

May 2006

The URBACT Initiative has three main Objectives:

To promote transnational exchange of information amongst cities participating in the URBAN I, II,cities participating in Urba Pilot projects, their partners and new member-states cities with a population of more than 20 000.
To draw lessons from the analysis of their experiences and of the policies implemented locally and to propose innoavtive approaches to those difficult issues.
To disseminate towards the actors in all Europeans cities the experiences in those different areas, the lessons learned and the resulting proposals for approach.

Nicosia participates in the Partners 4 Action Network, which is a thematic network on Public Private Partnership (PPPs) led by the city of Liverpool (UK), and provides an opportunity for city to city exchange of information and best practice, on how to attract and use private sector investment to regenerate urban neighborhoods.

The specific objectives of the Network include:

Examination of the role that PPPs play in urban and neighborhood renewal through the exchange of experience between the networks cities.
Exploration and identification of good and bad practice from which other cities can learn.
Production and dissemination of (transferable knowledge) that can be used and adapted by other cities as a framework to support private sector involvement / investment.

Participating cities include ten main partners from old EU member states and three partners from new EU member states including Nicosia.

EU Structural Funds (European Regional Development Fund): Objective 2 of Regional Policy

An extensive area of Nicosia Municipality that runs along the buffer zone that currently divides Nicosia has been designated as eligible for projects to be funded under Priority 2 which concerns »Integrated Urban Regenartion«, of the Objective 2 Programme 2004-2006 for Cyprus.

The overall aim is the economic and social regeneration of areas, which face serios structural problems, in order to contribute to the stabilization of the depopulation trend and to achieve greater social and economic cohesion.

The specific objectives associated with Priority 2 »The Regeneration of Urban Areas in Decline: Measure 1: Integrated Urban Regeneration« are the following:

The improvement of the urban built environment and cultural infrastructure
The provision of community facilities
The facilitation of entrepreneurship and innovation.

This Measure is expected to foster the regeneration of the area through the creation of a more attractive environment for entrepreneurs and the local population, in order to increase the competitiveness of the area through new activities that will upgrade it. The increase of accsess of the residents to social services wil be part of the main tools of intervention of this Measure. Furthermore, the promotion of cultural amenities will contribute to the socio-economic upgrading of the area.

Within the context of the area schemes there are a number of indicative activities that must be implemented. Hese are:

Activity 1: Upgrading of the built environment
Activity 2: Socio-cultural infrastructure

Total public expenditure for Cyprus for Priority 2 (»Integrated Urban Regenartion«): € 16,820,414.

Activity 3: Supporting Infrastructure for SMEs Activity 4: Information Technology applications for enhancement of planning and monitoring (Geographic Information System).

The historic centre of Nicosia along with Kaimakli and Palouriotissa, two of the oldest quarters of the city, are the focus of the projects planned for implementation under this Programme. The projects and actions that will be funded concern Activity 1, Activity 2 and Activity 4 and they comprise the conversation and rehabilitation and reuse of architectural heritage.


The remit of the Nicosia Municipality European Affairs Committee 

Cyprus's accesion to the European union provides a wide spectrum of possibilities for furthering and upgrading the role and range of services that the Municipality offers to its citizens. 

The Committee of European Affairs was set up at the beginning of 2002 and was assigned the significant role of suggesting and promoting the realization of projects and actions in the context of European policies. 

The Committee's objectives have been set as follows:

To promote the improvement, upgrading and adjustment of the role and functions of Nicosia Municipality and local Administration in general, under the light of policies and practices followed by cities and more specifically capital cities in other member-states of the European Union (E.U.).

To promote the understanding and implementation of E.U. policies, programmes, initiatives est. Within the Municipality.

To promote the participation of Nicosia in European Network of cities and other relevant agencies.

To be informed about the availability of EU funds and of the opportunities of participation in initiatives, programmes or other EU networks, esspecially those that promote bi-communal cooperation, so as to suggest the authorization of appropriate action by the Municipal Council.

To examine and promote issues relating to the development of the capacity of the Municipality to effectively seize opportunities offered by the European environment towards an improvement of the services it delivers, the conditions leading to the sustainable development of the city and the quality of life in Nicosia.

To coordinate the Municipality's efforts to inform citizens about the benefits that EU membership conveys, thus promoting a pro-European mentality that will eventually have a catalytic effect on the materialization of EU policies at a local level.
